I usually write articles for the energy industry. I'm taking a detour today to talk about health care in Saskatchewan. You may ask why am I doing this? Although I don't like to write about my personal life, I have to to get to the point.
At the end of January, I got my long-awaited hip replacement. The operation went well and my recovery was advanced. excellent. It wasn't until mid-March that I noticed some ice under the snow, which caused me to slip and fall. This in turn breaks the femur in the same bone as the hip replacement. Operate again. not good I got home and started to recover then on Easter Sunday I fell at home with my walker on and broke my femur. excellent. I installed two titanium plates. It went well, but a few days later I had a fever, I went back to the hospital for another operation to clear the infection from the staff and I stayed in the hospital for ten days.
I am back home but on some very strong antibiotics to cure all the infections in my body. This was undoubtedly the most difficult period of my life. There have been conversations with family, friends and God, but more on that later.
Like most Canadians, I am critical of our country's health care. This can easily be done by simply watching the news or talking to a friend. But now that I have a pretty good understanding of how it works, I definitely have a perspective on the system. There are many problems in the system, noticeable waiting times, some organizational errors and inefficiencies. Add to that the lack of health professionals willing to stay in Saskatchewan.

These can be fixed, but all parties need to be involved, and as with anything, these fixes will cost a lot of money. All parties, namely trade unions, all levels of government, health administrations, payers and of course the health workers themselves. But despite the many black spots, these can be fixed with the right combination of resources and willpower.
Healthcare Professionals – No matter what position these workers are in, they are mostly friendly, smiling, hardworking and there to do the right thing for their patients. The nurses were the best, they looked me in the eye and did their jobs with humor and genuine compassion. The doctors were amazing and did everything they could to calm Val and me while they gave us the not so good news. X-ray technicians, porters and cleaning staff are competent and friendly. I saw a lot of good humorous jokes in a place that is often filled with bad news. The two nurses hugged Val and shed tears. You can't fake that. They just need to hold unions accountable for providing the best care to taxpayers.
The health associations must also take a certain responsibility. Leaders need to stop talking about how good they are and be really good. I mean to look for common ground with the government to find profitable and fair solutions. The public perception is that union leaders care more about their paychecks than the health care system they claim to support.

Administrators must understand how the system works. These people should be able to see through the fog of inefficiency and create solutions that simplify the system. They must work hand-in-hand with front-line workers to achieve one goal, "make the system better."
But what did I learn from this experience? Despite feeling miserable at 2am and feeling sorry for myself, I learned that I was very lucky. My friends have been sending me well wishes and prayers. They brought food and sat down for coffee with me. Many people call me from the fields to let me know how the work is going (important for the right hand). As I mentioned before, some late night talks with God also helped clear things up.
I have been fortunate enough to work for a company that kept me involved, albeit with a reduced workload. Staying involved in the action has had a bigger psychological impact on me than you can imagine. Many of us define ourselves by what we do, and I've learned that having the support of your business partner goes a long way in the recovery process.
My family has always been great. They called me regularly, prayed for me, visited me and offered all the support they could. My brothers, brother-in-law, daughter, husband and grandchildren have lifted me up countless times. My wife Val has been a rock through this whole ordeal. He consulted the doctors, helped me get the right medication and made sure I ate the food my body needed to heal. But most of the time he tells me he loves me and that everything will be fine. (and remind me not to fall again...)

The last time I was in the hospital, I received a call late at night from my friend Paul. He gave me some great advice telling me not to worry but not to be lazy about my recovery and reminding me that it's not cancer but I will get well. We end by telling each other how much we mean to each other. That phone call will stay with me forever.
But back to our healthcare system. Is it about money? The health budget for 2023-2024 will increase by $431 million to $6.9 billion. When you add each region's annual fundraiser, it sounds like a lot of money. Having navigated the health service for the past few months, I have some advice for the health secretary.
Talk to frontline workers. Ask questions that only they can answer. What do you need? How can we help you? What actually needs to be improved in the system? Don't just talk, take all suggestions seriously and involve them. Don't be arrogant, just listen.
Make the system easier to navigate. In a world dominated by tablets and electronic messages, we still use a lot of paper. We still use the fax machine! Visit the Mayo Clinic to learn how to expedite treatment in a timely manner. Let's learn how to manage healthcare in the computer age.
I also noticed that many patients were not very "patient". Most of the people I shared a room with were great, but some were not friendly to the healthcare staff. As people who use the system, we need to respect these overworked people. I do my best to be polite and understanding every opportunity I get. A little courtesy is always worth it.
Now I can see the irony of someone like me using tons of health resources to comment on the system. But the past few months have given me an "insight" into the inner workings of health care in Saskatchewan. Hopefully, if someone in government takes the time to sit down and have a cup of coffee, I will be more than happy to offer my ideas and thoughts. I even pay for the coffee.
Brian Crossman is a partner at Esteban Independent Well Servicing. His goal is to make things a little better, even if it means admitting that he did something. Hey, Health Minister, Paul Merriman, why don't you call him sometime?
