excellent software

A few frustrations here and there, but the benefits far outweigh the problems. The best thing is that I can sleep at night without thinking about this or that case. It has really improved my professional life and it has greatly improved my personal life because the software really does tie up the loose ends.

ADVANTAGES

Handles all aspects of a law firm: (1) contact management (2) records management (3) document management (4) communications management. I love having everything at hand.

OPPOSITE

I can't think of anything. It works very well.

It is a good program for the cost and allows all attorneys and paralegals to communicate and track the status of all cases.

ADVANTAGES

This program is great for keeping track of cases, clients, court dates, job offers, escrow accounts, and billing.

OPPOSITE

When closing program elements, care must be taken that the entire program on the user's computer is not accidentally closed. There is no warning that you are about to close all programs on your computer. While the Trust feature is nice, it does have limitations. You can't interact with the bank, so verifying the account is a manual process. Also, the custodial function is limited to an individual case report. The program does not provide the user with an overview of the general status of all deposits in a separate report.

Reason to choose Amicus Lawyer

Amicus Attorney worked better than the alternatives.

Much clumsier than we expected. Big learning curve. do for now.

ADVANTAGES

TIME MANAGEMENT AND TRADING: Timers and time entries are very simple. Get to know everyone involved in an issue in one place; Engineers, judges, etc. It's a great resource. Adding emails to an archive is a good idea, but it is time consuming. It's nice to have all of a customer's data in one place. BILLING: I like that the billing page and attorney page are separate. Billing and accepting payments works great. Amicus can split the billing, which is important to us. The interface with Quickbooks is quirky, but after 1.7 years of working with it, we have resolved most of the issues and found solutions. The reports can be downloaded in Excel, which is vital for my management of the company.

OPPOSITE

CONS: The end-user learning curve is huge and unintuitive, which has led many lawyers to waste time and not use Amicus for anything else. The text on the screen is exceptionally small and problematic for most users. The interface is not intuitive and requires a lot of trial and error to figure out the best ways to find what you want or report the problem. We were led to believe that the document management interface would work for us, but upon testing it we found that it would not work with our setup. So we still have to deal with Microsoft Explorer to manage documents, which is tedious. In general, our approval rate in Amicus is probably only 50%. There are so many features that we like about the concept that it was difficult to attract lawyers because the user interface is not easy to use. TIME AND ISSUES MANAGEMENT: Data in our conflict database did not translate well from our previous system, so conflict reviews take a long time. Adding emails or files to the subject is very cumbersome. Ticklers are fancy and difficult to manage in Outlook. Tickler reports are very limited events with no date range or date range but no file selection. Running tickers for a single topic is impossible. Need more filters. BILLING: Reports downloaded to Excel are unusable due to all the merged fields and non-use of tables. We need to download CSV reports and spend time figuring out what the column headers really are. I use the selection tools to display topics or time entries on the screen

For our purposes, this software does everything that most company members expect of it.

ADVANTAGES

The calendar function works as expected and all members associated with this event can view the event on their calendar and make changes or updates if necessary. The phone feature works even if you don't have the phone system connected to your computer, as you can use it to take notes and keep track of your billable time. The time tracking wizard is really nice as it allows you to identify items in your day that you may have missed for billing purposes.

OPPOSITE

It doesn't integrate seamlessly with WordPerfect as I'd expect, and it doesn't work well with any email provider other than Outlook.

Easy to use

ADVANTAGES

Keep track of everything with a single program. All my correspondence/communications, contact information, file information, documents, schedule, calendar, etc. are tracked through Amicus. It's like a one-stop deal.

OPPOSITE

I try to keep people (contact list) clean, ie by consolidating or deleting multiples. My people panel looks fine after I "cleaned" it, but no one else since each user has their own module/domain. I just want these kinds of changes to take effect for all users.

A friend of criticism

I've been using different versions of Amicus non-stop since 1999. If it works, that's great. The show reminds me a bit of the General Motors cars my parents bought. All the cars had problems. GM always promised that next year's maintenance would be better than ever and hassle-free. But that never happened. I'm sticking with the Amicus because, to my knowledge, there's nothing better on the market, and because the replacement price probably isn't justified. However, the Amicus program I'm using is still very buggy.

ADVANTAGES

I like it because it organizes me. It is easy to use (when it works) and very logical.

OPPOSITE

I am not satisfied with the many flaws and quirks of the system. If you buy it, you will have to make friends with a really smart geek who will be able to work out the many quirks of the system. It crashes regularly. I am happy to pay my computer technician a fixed monthly fee because otherwise I will be in financial trouble.

Tech support is slow and usually never calls back

ADVANTAGES

I like all the software. However, for the cost, the accounting side is lacking and the tech support is terrible. For the price of this software I expect more.

OPPOSITE

The cost and technical support. If you want to double the cost of software, you should at least have good tech support. In recent calls I was told that I needed advanced technical support for my problem. I still haven't received a call back even though they promised to call me back within 24 hours. I had to hire an outside consultant at my expense to resolve this issue. I am having a hard time paying a monthly subscription for this terrible support. I would like an answer to this, but when I ask about tech support calls, they don't respond.

bad support

I was a big supporter of the Amicus Attorney and referred several local offices to them. His support team was excellent. Since the merger with Abacus, the quality of support has dropped significantly. I am so fed up with them that I will be moving to a new case management program when my current Amicus contract expires.

ADVANTAGES

It was a good easy to use program with excellent support.

OPPOSITE

The support is terrible now. The support team has limited knowledge of the program, which has become problematic since the merger with Abacus. Quickly escalate issues to the "next level" support person who will call you back. But they don't call back. You have to keep calling her.

does not always think like me (as a person thinks); can be very slow at times; complicated

Ability to keep track of what we are doing and schedule hearings. Ability to create an invoice that you can amend for the customer.

ADVANTAGES

The software is very organized. I know where all my main functions/features are and they are pretty easy to use and understand.

OPPOSITE

We don't use most of the higher amicus features because they're too hard to learn and cost a small fortune to train, not to mention time consuming. For this reason we do not use documents or communications. Billing can be a hassle if I want to split something differently. The reports are not easy to create and don't seem to have the functionality I'd like.

Amicus - Intuitive without being intrusive!

Law enforcement at any level is a business. As such, the end result must always be considered. Amicus saved the company money and also made money for my clinic. He saved money by being so efficient that I reduced staff. I no longer need a filing cabinet or assistant to organize my time, calendar, and tasks. Amicus does all these things automatically. Amicus made money for the company by automatically and efficiently creating timesheets and accounts.

ADVANTAGES

Amicus has allowed my firm to be at the forefront of our industry, allowing us to be completely paper-free and compliant with federal and state e-filing requirements. Automated document control features save time by allowing us to skip the routine of scanning, storing, moving, inserting and naming documents where they can be found. Amicus performs all these steps automatically, and also offers you the possibility to view the documents in the Amicus archive without having to open them! The customization features allow you to customize the appearance and behavior of Amicus the way you want to do things. You don't have to put up with that, Amicus does it for you. The creation of time lapses and accounting will amaze you as it can capture all your time. Reviewing and editing time entries is quick and easy. Posting to an account is simple and fast. The ability to view and edit accounts is also powerful. And of course, you can customize your invoice templates to make your invoices look just the way you want. The customer portal is another fixed savings feature. It allows you to give clients access to the documents, events and news of your choice. I see this as malpractice insurance! All communication is open to the client. You can view your documents, your appointments and send messages to you. This completely eliminates the "I can't talk to my lawyer" complaint. It's all there for you to see. And again only what you allow.

OPPOSITE

Amicus is really a great product. Small issues like the client portal being a bit finicky could be improved. This is a new feature and is intended to allow customers to reset their passwords and log in more easily.

Amicus for small law firm

Amicus online cloud. generally good. Customer service was decent. Access is occasionally slow at certain times of the day. This can be annoying if someone tries to upload/download large documents or use email during these delays. I would like to see the maintenance schedules posted so we know when to expect delays. I would also like information on pre-releases and forming a user organization to provide feedback on new features and revisions to old features.

ADVANTAGES

The product is generally intuitive. Email, phone, tasks, calendar, contact and document management, time tracking, expenses, and billing are well integrated. The new customer portal is widespread.

OPPOSITE

Client portal capabilities should be extended to allow cases (files) to have finer granular access control when multiple clients on a file need different levels and access to different documents. We'd be more inclined to use document templates once we understood them better, especially for setting up logic-based variable paragraphs. Security controls around document folders need to be expanded to allow different levels of access for different levels of users. For example. I should be able to delete and rename folders I created, but without admin rights, not delete or rename folders created by others. I'd like to see editors integrated with document management instead of having to take them offline and then load them.

Amicus Attorney has been in action for over 10 years

ADVANTAGES

Having a small law firm with 1-2 lawyers, used Premium. Lots of features, many of which I didn't use due to the learning curve and pace of daily practice. Since I integrated QuickBooks and Outlook, I found it more useful, but it was cumbersome and frustrating. The WSBA Law Practice Management Team recommended using Outlook for case management only. The phone notes feature came in handy and wasn't really available in Outlook when I first invested in the software. Tech support was very good and responsive after paying for the subscription. I like that they take over the remote and quickly help solve problems.

OPPOSITE

I have often thought of keeping Amicus; But once you've invested in such software, the price of switching products is high. It has improved over the years. I don't use Tasks as designed because it requires a lot of data entry. I modified a system that seems to work well enough and requires less data entry, but still keeps track of upcoming deadlines and target dates.

Revised January 2018

It's a strong integration of customer information, calendar, and email retention.

I was able to keep my data from my previous version of Amicus, but the new one has a lot more power than I need to practice solo.

ADVANTAGES

It has the ability to store and order a large amount of information. I like the calendar, file integration, and the ability to trace contacts. The ability to save emails to a specific file instead of trying to retrieve them from Outlook is very useful.

OPPOSITE

It crashes very often. It was difficult to open a business with only one lawyer. It is inconsistent on its own records. For example, it says that we should assign a client ID to each client and use that ID for each file, but half the time it says that we can't use the client ID because it's already in use. Customer email addresses are not recognized upon receipt, and when I associate an email with a contact already on the list, I get a message that there are duplicate entries for the email. The same message says to use some kind of command to clean up duplicates, but I can't find where the function exists. The lack of a paper manual is very frustrating.

A wonderful program to manage client files. As a tool for sending invoices, it's not that great.

I really like this program overall and the customer support is great. But the mediocrity of the billing component prevents me from calling this a top-notch program.

ADVANTAGES

The Calendar, Communication Center and File Management modules are invaluable and much better than just using Outlook.

OPPOSITE

The accounting function is very complicated and not easy to use. Accounting templates suck and you need to have extensive knowledge of report builder to change templates or create new ones. I integrated Amicus with Timeslips before moving to the billing component. Transferring billing information between Amicus and timestamps was a problem, as every time I synced it would send data both ways and end up with the same timestamp up to 10 times.

Reason to choose Amicus Lawyer

Amicus was recommended to me by my state bar association.

needs some work......

Honestly, the previous Amicus program was much better than the online version. But I do this job.

ADVANTAGES

I like that I have all my clients and cases easily accessible.

OPPOSITE

The mobile app leaves a lot to be desired. After a few years of use, I still can't see a calendar in my app or transfer my calendar to Outlook. I also asked the new company to develop the ability to print a "NEW BUSINESS REPORT" like the old Amicus did. Some time ago I got an email saying they accepted my suggestion, but this program doesn't have that capability yet as far as I know.

Reason to choose Amicus Lawyer

I was familiar with the version of Amicus I had before (computer-based) and I really liked it. This one was a little disappointing, but I'll make sure it works.

Do not practice law without an amicus attorney

I have been using Amicus Attorney in my small business for over 20 years and could not practice without it. It saves me time and helps me organize my to-do list. It also reminds me of appointments and work to do. Without Amicus Attorney's ability to quickly call cases and people, preserve what has been said and done, and collect everything on the spot, I would not be able to handle the type and volume of work that I do. Highly recommended.

ADVANTAGES

With Amicus Abogado I save time and money. No more missed charges as the charge happens at the same time as my work, whether it's a call or a money order.

OPPOSITE

One feature you should consider is whether Amicus Abogado will connect with your billing program, because when it comes to billing, all you have to do is submit your already recorded and scheduled time for the billing program to process.

I used to love Amicus

The system freezes, freezes and is excruciatingly slow. There doesn't seem to be any customer support these days (and I've been a user of the program since the 90's and it seemed to work fine back then and we had more users at this company).

ADVANTAGES

The calendar and the linking of ALL the information of each file, including contacts and anticipated appointments, automatically calculated from a certain date, etc. it is incredibly beneficial in our world of processes.

OPPOSITE

Support for the program waned over the years. The customer service is terrible. The program has changed a lot and now it runs VERY slow and often crashes. It's cumbersome to use, but it's still the most complete program to our knowledge for handling complex (and not so complex) litigation.

Amicus Lawyer Software

ADVANTAGES

The ability to integrate your email, calendar, reminders, and case upload into one is what sets amicus apart. Every time I had a problem the support team was quick and efficient. Also very polite.

OPPOSITE

Many features take a long time to set up. As a small company, we don't have a separate IT department and we simply can't make full use of amicus. I have also experienced employees being overwhelmed by the software. Training can be boring.

Overall, Amicus does what I need at a reasonable price for my solo practice.

ADVANTAGES

I like the general administration features and the ability to keep track of time and billing. Although I haven't used it yet, I like the idea of the customer portal and the ability to accept payments.

OPPOSITE

The email system is inconsistent. Sometimes cutting and pasting a message alters the format of the email, and often different fonts are used in the final message, even though the message you're composing isn't visible. Often the server slows down and can't send the message or loses it and has to start over, that's the worst. I often have to reload Amicus because it gets "stuck" on a page and won't move forward. ADVANTAGES

It maintains a large database in which the information, files and communications of each client can be accessed.

OPPOSITE

Not very friendly. Lots of white space and small text. Why not enlarge the text? Lots of simple and easy to use features could be added, but they always seem to be up to date with other issues that they can't fix. Updates with fixes are often promised but not available. They would rather sell the next "update" product than fix the current version. The QA department has no incentive to fix things. Customer service is really terrible. ADVANTAGES

The team loves administrative billing. Timer is very easy to use and publish, although it requires more clicks than it should.

OPPOSITE

Very inflexible. Little things like expanding windows, changing font size, etc. are not allowed. The system does not allow you to save a client file to a drive or floppy disk. Emails are only stored on a cloud system, not on your internal servers, so you can't back up emails or save them to a drive. Revised July 2020

Solid program and excellent support.

I have had very good experiences with Amicus, especially with the integrated file/contact/case management.

ADVANTAGES

Very functional and practical product. I have been using it for many years, mainly for calendar, contacts, and file management. The best customer support of any software I have ever worked with! Fully responsive and effective.

OPPOSITE

(Video) Why Isn't SEGA Overprotective of its Intellectual Property?

Integration with the SOQUEL service can be tricky, but customer support is usually able to resolve issues and my own IT staff will take care of what they can't/can't.
